Things I Don’t Know

by Joe Davis and Jocelyn Scott

Where have you wandered off to
I wish that I knew
I wish that I could understand
Shut it down, my city of Boston
Good one to get lost in
Even if it’s not what we had planned tonight
I think that everything will be all right

It defies all deduction
The sweet combustion
Of who you are and who I am
And the wind from the harbor
Is making it harder
To sift it into charts and diagrams tonight
My defenses are not watertight

And your mind is a mystery to me
And there’s more to the world than I see
And I measure the risk and let go
Things I don’t know

Scan the crowds east of Fenway
The good people of Back Bay
Each of us surrounded and alone
Winding through this urban romance
Sidewalks in a slow dance
Why are you not answering your phone tonight
The street and I are bathed in neon light

And your mind is a mystery to me
There’s more to this world than I see
And I measure the risk and let go
Things I don’t know

(Oooo—)

Where have you wandered off to
The way the world moves
The way our lives are intertwined
Avenues intersecting
Are we connecting
The process here is strangely undefined tonight
How will I know if I get it right

And your mind is a mystery to me
There’s more to this world than I see
I measure the risk and let go

And you laugh, and I turn; there you stand
And I smile, and you reach for my hand
And you’re asking me where did I go
Where did I go
Things I don’t know
